Launch of humanitarian demining project involving women canine handlers in Ukraine

KRASYLIVKA, UKRAINE - AUGUST 21, 2024 - A canine handler with a Belgian Malinois is being interviewed during the official launch of the joint humanitarian demining project of UNDP, Ukrainian Economy Ministry, Mines Advisory Group (MAG) and APOPO funded by the Netherlands and Spain, Krasylivka village, Kyiv region, northern Ukraine. Sixteen Technical Survey Dogs (TSDs) alongside eight women handlers underwent extensive training in Cambodia for five months before returning to Ukraine. Over the next seven months, the teams are expected to survey around 1,800 square kilometres of land in Kharkiv Oblast, enabling the safe return of invaluable land for productive use.
